چکیده

Since its introduction in 1986 as a tool for imaging and creating three-dimensional micrographs with resolution down to the nanometer and angstrom scales, the scanning probe microscope (SPM) has increasingly been acclaimed as a quantitative probe of surface forces such as adhesion. The SPM is able to study these important parameters using a technique that measures forces on the probe as it approaches and retracts from a surface. The technique of measuring the adhesion force between the probe and the different organic contaminants and fluxes is established. To ensure accuracy of the adhesion force measured, the spring constant of each cantilever used in the force measurement was accurately determined by measuring the exact dimensions of the cantilever by means of the scanning electron microscope and the modulus determined using the nano-indentation system.

Long Range Forces from the Cosmological Neutrino Background

The cosmological neutrino background will mediate long range forces between objects. For a background of temperature T, the potential decreases as 1/r 5 for r >> 1/T and as 1/r for r << 1/T. These forces have large spin-dependent components. If the neutrino background is nonrelativistic, the long range forces are enhanced by a factor of the inverse neutrino velocity. These long range forces may...

The Extragalactic Ionizing Background at Low Redshift

We present a measurement of the mean intensity of the hydrogen-ionizing background radiation field at low redshift using 906 Lyα absorption lines in 151 quasar spectra from the archives of the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Using a maximum likelihood technique and the best estimates possible for each QSO’s Lyman limit flux and systemic redshift, we find J(ν...

1 Epic in Orbit Background

We briefly describe the methods used in compiling a set of high galactic latitude background data. The characteristics and limitations of the data which affect their use as a template for analysing extended objects are described. We briefly describe a spectral fitting analysis of the data which reveals a normalisation for the extragalac-tic background of 11.4 keV cm −2 s −1 sr −1 , which implie...

A short outline is given on the application of differential regularization to QCD in the background-field method. The derivation of the propagators in the background gluon field as short-distance expansions is described and the renormalization of the theory is mentioned.

Video Segmentation via Diffusion Bases

Identifying moving objects in a video sequence, which is produced by a static camera, is a fundamental and critical task in many computer-vision applications. A common approach performs background subtraction, which identifies moving objects as the portion of a video frame that differs significantly from a background model. A good background subtraction algorithm has to be robust to changes in ...

The potential of GENIUS as a dark matter detector is discussed. A study was performed to demonstrate the good behaviour of the proposed detector design of naked HPGe-crystals in liquid nitrogen. The expected background components were simulated and are discussed in some detail. With the obtained background GENIUS could cover a large part of the favoured MSSM parameter-space.
